Safely has two product options to meet your needs

Safely has two very different pepper spray products to meet your needs for a self-defense device. The Safely Pepper Spray + Keychain is a tiny, pocket-sized pepper spray that's about the size of a jumbo lip balm. It easily fits in jean pockets and comes in eight colors. It's basic, but effective.

On the other hand, the Safely Sidekick is the Swiss Army knife of pepper sprays. It comes with pepper spray, a loud alarm (130 decibles), 150 lumens flashlight, a brass-knuckles-type grip, and a keychain or glass breaker.

Both products come with the type of things you would want in a quality pepper spray:

  • Quick access: The pepper spray pops out of its case easily for fast protection.
  • Safety lock: The lock prevents accidental spraying.
  • Decent strength: The formula is lab-tested and has 1.4% Major Capsaicinoids for a powerful spray strength.
  • UV dye: The spray marks attackers for easy identification
  • Long-range: It's effective up to 10 feet, keeping threats at a distance.
  • High capacity: Safely gives you up to 25 bursts per canister for multiple uses.
  • Extended shelf life: It lasts up to 4 years.
"They're lab tested. We work with a lab in Ohio...On all of our boxes we have how to use it on the back. So we're really wanting to teach people, you know, not just how to carry the product, but how to use it in case you need to, because if you're carrying it, and you've never practiced, it doesn't do you any good."
—Ashley Raymond, Safely co-founder and CEO

Feature we love: You can practice

In our opinion, one of the best features of Safely pepper sprays is that you can get a practice pepper spray in your order for just a few dollars more. The practice sprayers are full of water, instead of pepper spray, so you don't have to worry about hurting yourself.

Co-founder and CEO, Ashley Raymond, understands how important practice can be. She told SafeWise about an experience she had with a college student recently.

"She [the college student] said, 'I just don't know if pepper spray does any good, because I was carrying it for a long time, and then I got in a situation where I thought I needed to use it, but it made me more scared. I had it in my hand because I had never used it before, so I felt more endangered.' And I was like, 'Well, okay, that's terrible, but here's the practice spray.' And we let her practice, and she was like, this is incredible."

Safely's price and features are right in line with its competitors. The only main difference is that its range is a bit shorter than most. That's not a huge problem, though, since 10 feet is probably far enough in many cases.

Final word

Overall, Safely Pepper Spray is a trustworthy, lab-tested pepper spray. We like that it's easy to use, you can get practice canisters, and there are two different versions to fit your needs. We also like that the spray contains UV marking dye—a feature that many competitors don't have. We also like that it's designed for women, by women.

Safely Pepper Spray FAQ

We recommend the Safely Sidekick for self-defense. It has:

  • 1.4% Major Capsaicinoids pepper spray
  • UV dye to mark target
  • 130-decibel alarm
  • Glass breaker
  • Flashlight
  • 10-foot range
  • Brass-knuckles-style grip

Yes, pepper spray can actually protect you. It can prevent someone from getting close to you and give you time to run away. Pepper spray with UV marking spray can also help in identifying assailants.

Safely is a woman-owned safety company that first started by producing safety videos. Then, it started a line of pepper sprays for self-defense. Safely's mission is:

"We believe no woman should ever feel scared to walk home alone, go for a run, get groceries, or do anything but live her best life.

"By providing tips, tools, and tactics to help women take charge of their safety, we're creating a safer tomorrow one day at a time."
