Meet the contenders: Ring vs. Eufy

Eufy

Eufy dabbles in a range of home products, from robot vacuums to smart devices for babies and pets. However, its real talent shines through in its cameras. Eufy boasts a comprehensive catalog of cameras with advanced streaming, detection, and video storage options. Most of its cameras record in 2K and up, offer local storage and feature smart motion detection. But last year, Eufy faced a security breach and concerns regarding its parent company, Anker, and its ties to China.

Ring

Ring, on the other hand, was purchased by Amazon in 2018, democratizing home security by making it more affordable. Ring has become a household name, known for capturing amusing animal antics and package thieves in the act. However, it has faced concerns related to local police partnerships, hacking incidents, and employee misconduct.

Ring vs. Eufy: Security cameras

Both Ring and Eufy offer doorbell cameras, indoor cameras, and outdoor cameras that record events and live stream video to their apps. Eufy's cameras tend to offer higher video quality than Ring's, with most recording in 2K, while Ring typically stays around 1080p. Ring is improving, with its newest doorbell recording in 1536p. However, in terms of clarity and picture quality, Eufy comes out on top.

When it comes to storing video clips, you have two options: local storage and cloud storage. Eufy excels at local storage, with some of its advanced cameras connecting to its HomeBase hub, capable of storing up to 16 TB of video on a hard drive. Ring offers cloud storage starting at $4 per month, allowing access to up to six months of video history.

Features and extras

Both brands offer common features like two-way audio, night vision, and motion alerts. Eufy's cameras stand out with advanced motion and sound detection, capable of distinguishing between a baby's cry and other sounds or recognizing regular visitors' faces. Eufy also offers unique cameras, including outdoor lights with built-in cameras, a garage door opener camera, and smart lock-video doorbell combos.

Ring keeps many unique features in its app, depending on the camera, accessories, and subscription level. Extras can include pro monitoring, custom chimes, answer tones, and even AI features that predict the path of individuals passing by your camera.

In this category, Eufy takes the lead, offering more high-resolution cameras and robust local storage options without requiring a monthly fee.

Security camera winner: Eufy

Ring vs. Eufy: Home security

Both Ring and Eufy offer home security systems. Ring has two options: the classic Ring Alarm and the newer Ring Alarm Pro, which includes a built-in Wi-Fi 6 router. Eufy's system is more a la carte, allowing users to add components as needed. While Ring offers more equipment and works with Z-Wave devices for expansion, Eufy's system offers false alarm forgiveness and monitoring through Noonlight.

Ring's home security system is the better choice, offering more equipment and compatibility with third-party devices. The Ring Alarm Pro also ensures your internet speeds won't be affected.

Home security winner: Ring

Ring vs. Eufy: Controversies

Both brands have faced controversies related to security breaches. In November 2022, Eufy faced a security breach that left user information vulnerable. Since then, the company has taken steps to enhance security.

In May 2023, Ring reached a $5.8 million settlement with the FTC over several violations, including instances of employee misconduct and security vulnerabilities. Despite these past issues, Ring has made efforts to improve security.

There are no winners when it comes to security and privacy breaches, but we’re encouraged that companies are being held accountable and responding to correct bad practices and prevent similar issues in the future.

Ring vs. Eufy: The winner

After a comprehensive review of cameras, security systems, and controversies, the question remains: Ring or Eufy? In our opinion, Eufy emerges as the better choice. Eufy offers higher-quality cameras that excel in recording, streaming, and multitasking. While Eufy's cameras may be slightly more expensive upfront, there are no ongoing monthly fees.

Ring, on the other hand, is more budget-friendly upfront but requires ongoing cloud subscription fees. It's a popular choice for those starting a home security system.

Overall winner: Eufy
