Crime rates and trends run higher than average in Kansas but property crime decreased year over year. Last year, Kansans were the least likely Americans to think that crime is increasing but were the fifth-highest state to believe crime is on the rise in our most recent State of Safety survey.

The Sunflower State’s crime rates sit above the national average but don’t top the charts. Kansas has the seventeenth-highest property crime and violent crime rates, meaning 32% of states see more crime per capita.

Property crime in Kansas saw a slight decline from 20.8 to 20.7 incidents per 1,000 people—matching the national rate, which rose this year for the first time since we started reporting on the safest cities. Since 2022, Kansas has seen a 6% decrease in property crime, so the state is heading in the right direction.

According to our State of Safety survey, Kansas respondents reported a 15% increase in property crime concern and a 9% increase in package theft concern. With that said, Kansans reported the nineteenth-lowest percentage of package theft experiences in the nation (KS 51%, US 53%).

• Most Kansas residents worry about property crime (55%)—more than any other crime, but package theft is a close second at 51%.
• 8 in 10 Kansas survey participants use some sort of security measure to protect their property.
• Of the Kansans who use some form of property protection, most (47%) prefer guard dogs., followed by firearms (37%). 
• Nearly 3 in 10 (27%) Kansans reported using no package theft prevention strategy. Otherwise, doorbell cameras were the most popular option (27%).
• 4 in 10 (40%) of Kansas respondents say they added or increased safety and security measures in the 12 months prior to the survey, which is above the national average of 35% and the thirteenth-highest percentage in the nation.

Kansas’s violent crime rate increased by 7% year over year, landing at 4.5 violent crimes per 1,000 people. That’s 14% higher than the national average of 4.0.

Our State of Safety story indicates Kansans are in sync with crime in their state. Both the level of concern about violent crime and reported experiences with it increased year over year.

• Nearly 1 in 2 (49%) Kansas respondents said they're highly concerned about violent crime, an 11% rise year over year (US 50%).
• 22% of survey respondents said they had a personal experience with violent crime in the 12 months prior to the survey—an increase from 16% last year (US 15%)
• Murder and robbery are less prevalent in Kansas than in the nation at large, representing 1% and 13% of all violent crime in the state, respectively (US 2% and 16%).
• Aggravated assault represents 75% of all violent crime in Kansas, and it makes up 71% of all violent crime nationwide.
• 38% of Kansas residents use some form of personal protection—with most (53%) preferring concealed firearms. 

• 47% of Kansans worry about gun violence (US 51%)—that's a 9% increase in concern year over year.
• 16% reported experience with gun violence in the 12 months prior to our survey (15% US).
• Kansans' gun violence experience increased 7% year over year.
• Two mass shooting events occurred in Kansas during 2023—one less than in 2022.

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

• 52 Kansas cities met the criteria for ranking this year.
• Eudora rose 2 positions up the list to land at number 1 this year, while Haysville took the biggest leap from number 16 to number 5.
• Basehor and Andover are new to the top 10 this year.
• Every city on our list reported zero murders, except Andover with 1.
• 2 cities reported 0 murders, rapes, and robberies: Ulysses and Bel Aire. 
• Gardner is the most populous city to make the top 10, making its low per capita crime rates even more impressive.
