Window films are an affordable way to add an extra element of privacy and protection around the home. However, not all films are created equal. Some films are better suited to giving you that extra bit of privacy, and have decorative or frosted finishes. In comparison, films specifically made for security will be much thicker, and are comparatively more expensive. Whether you choose a security film or privacy film will depend on if you’d like an extra layer of protection in case of break-in, or if you want to stop any onlookers peering in.

We’ve compiled some recommendations to help you make an informed choice on what type of film suits your needs best. Check out our frequently asked questions to learn about the benefits of window film.

What are mils?

Don't be fooled into thinking 'mils' are the same measurement as 'mm'. When talking about the thickness of security film, you'll see the measurement of 'mils'. One mil is equal to one-thousandth of an inch, or 0.00254cms. Many decorative films have a thickness of 1 mil, while stronger security films are typically 4-8 mils.

The BDF S8MC is a great option for those looking to up their security. It's 8mils thick, and will likely do an excellent job at containing shattered glass in case of a break-in. In addition, it also blocks out 99% of UV.

While it's not the cheapest option on our list at $67.65 a metre, the film's thickness and quality speak for themselves.

Unlike some of the other brands we reviewed, BDF comes with two tools: a cutting knife and a rubber squeegee to help you install the film.

3. Haton Textured Privacy Film: Best budget privacy film

The Haton Textured Privacy Film was the strongest competitor for the privacy films we looked at. It's affordable, at $15.49 per metre of film, and has a frosted texture finish, to prevent onlookers from peering in. The textured film gives you an extra layer of privacy, while still keeping your home stylish.

There are various levels of privacy film available, and even some that completely black out your home windows, like our top pick, the Rabbitgoo Frosted Window Film. This might be favourable in areas that need complete privacy, such as bathroom windows. However, the Haton Textured Privacy Film is a solid (and stylish) option for people considering upping their privacy in other areas of the home.

4. Nidojp Clear Security Window Film: Best budget security film

Best budget security film

Price is accurate as of publish date. Read full disclaimer.

Nidojp Clear Security Window Film offers two different thicknesses: 4 mils and 8 mils. Although 8 mils offers the best protection, the 4 mil option is a good choice if you're on a strict budget, starting at less than $40.

If you're after widespread coverage, this film comes in lengths of up to 30m, which is one of the longest rolls we've seen.

On the downside, the UV protection isn't nearly as good as our top security film pick, the BDF S8MC, which offers 99% UV rejection in comparison to the Nidojp film's 21% for the 4-mil option and 36% for the 8-mil option.

Final word

While you'd guess right that there's not much to say about a sheet of plastic, we think that the Rabbitgoo Frosted Window Film and the BDF S8MC Window Film are the best privacy and security window film for most people. Simply put, they are strong products worth it at their price point.

If you don't think window film is the best choice for your home, consider checking out a home security system, or other ways to boost your home security if you're on a budget.

Security and privacy window film FAQ

Window security film can delay intruders long enough for someone to spot them. A glass window that's difficult to break can be a strong deterrent because burglars don't like to stick around longer than necessary. Aside from helping prevent burglaries, window security films also protect against flying shards of glass.

While all security films improve safety by preventing flying glass shards from causing injuries, thicker films can boost security against burglars. The thicker the film, the longer it takes to break out of the window frame—8- and 12-mil films are the best choice for impact protection.

Most window security films use a strong adhesive to stick to your windows with smaller pieces easier to install in general.

Steps to install window security film:

  1. Measure and cut the film to fit your window or glass door. Cut slightly larger than your window so that you can trim the exact edges after installation.
  2. Clean the window. It's also a good idea to dust things nearby to keep particles off the adhesive surface.
  3. Remove the backing that protects the adhesive. Be careful not to touch the adhesive.
  4. Spray the adhesive surface with soapy water.
  5. Place the adhesive surface on the glass and align it with how you want it.
  6. Use a squeegee to remove the water and air bubbles—work from the centre to outside and top to bottom. Make sure to hold the film in place until it doesn't move on its own.
  7. After applying the film to the whole surface, use a sharp utility knife to trim off the excess window film. For ultra-straight edges, we recommend using a ruler or other straight-edged tool to keep the knife edge as close to the window frame as possible.

People  use both types of window film for security, but they work differently:

Security window film physically reinforces glass panes to keep any glass fragments from falling to the floor from a broken window. Some security film also has tinting for added privacy and graffiti protection. These films stick to windows using an adhesive.

Privacy window film changes the appearance of glass surfaces to prevent people from looking inside your home. It usually relies on static cling to stay on a window, though there are options that use an adhesive.

Like security window film, laminated glass is another way to prevent windows from shattering. It puts the film between two glass layers. This type of glass comes specially manufactured from a factory and is most common in car windshields, though you can find it in all kinds of buildings.

How we reviewed

We analysed the prices, thickness, and sizes of many different security and privacy window films. We looked only at clear security film and ignored window tint and graffiti protection films entirely, though we might add these in a future update.
