When your life is at risk, it can be difficult to accurately convey where you are or what's going on. Thanks to new technology by the NSW Police Force, you can now share your exact location, making it easier for them to reach you in an emergency.
When you call Triple Zero – depending on the situation – emergency services will request your location. They’ll text you a link to a platform called BluLink, where accepting the request will reveal your exact GPS coordinates. It also allows you to livestream your location and provide relevant information via the chat function, which can translate your message into over 100 languages. In some cases, police may also ask you to upload witness statements or images for evidence via BluLink.
BluLink is a part of the NSW Police Force’s Digital Policing Roadmap and aims to help cops quickly get to the scene of an emergency. It's a groundbreaking new platform for missing hikers and situations where the victim is unable to communicate via a phone call.
The rollout comes after a successful 12-month trial in metro and regional areas. During the trial, BluLink has pinpointed over 8300 locations, including the locations of over 100 high-risk missing persons and 60 missing bushwalkers. It was also used to collate footage, CCTV and witness statements during the investigation following the Bondi Junction stabbing in April.
