As kids grow up, they often want to start exercising a bit more independence. Whether that's walking home from school by themselves or going to the shops with their friends, it's only natural for parents to want some way of keeping an eye on their little ones.

We've examined all the different types of kids GPS trackers available on the market and narrowed it down to two main categories: GPS tracker smartwatches and basic GPS trackers. We've also highlighted budget alternatives for each, so there's something for everyone.

Alternatives to kids GPS trackers

A kids GPS tracker is a stepping-stone towards your child's first smartwatch or phone. Here's a quick guide to what's best for each age group:

Best kids GPS tracker reviews

1. Spacetalk Adventurer: Best GPS tracker smartwatch for kids

Best GPS smartwatch
Spacetalk Adventurer 2
$279🔥(20% OFF)plus monthly mobile plan

Price is accurate as of publish date. Read full disclaimer.

We love that the Spacetalk Adventurer 2 isn’t just a smartwatch for parents; it includes features that kids enjoy too. Your child can choose how to communicate, whether it’s through HD-quality video calls, voice calls, text messages or taking photos through the 5MP camera. The band is slim, light, and flexible, meaning it's comfortable to wear, too.

Another thing we're a big fan of is the parent-controlled contact list. Your child won't be able to add any new contacts themselves - only those with the parental app can do so.

Other features include a fitness tracker, School Mode, reminders and alerts, Safe Zones (geofencing), GPS location tracking (both real-time and historical), and SOS alerts that your kid can use in an emergency. Plus, it's IP67 water-resistant with a tough Gorilla Glass screen, meaning it'll survive after working in the rain or after an drop in the bathtub.

Cons
con Shorter battery life
con Locked to Spacetalk's mobile network
con Expensive up-front price

On the downside, it is one of the more expensive options on our list, and some features do require a monthly subscription fee (from $5.99), plus the battery life leaves a bit to be desired.

The Spacetalk Adventurer 2 is locked to Spacetalk's own mobile network and comes with a SIM card included. It runs on the Telstra network and provides unlimited talk and text, plus some data. One bonus of using their network is that, in doing so, the Spacetalk app subscription fee (normally $5.99 for BYO mobile plans) is waived.

2. Opel Safety Pendant: Best basic GPS tracker for kids

The Opel Safety Pendant isn't super feature-packed, and it's not the kind of gift your kid is likely going to be excited to show off at school, but its safety features and ability to bring your own SIM make it one of our favourites.

Through the accompanying app, you can track and monitor your child's whereabouts and set up geofence alerts for when they've strayed a little too far.

Your little one needs only to press the SOS button to start a two-way call with you, and it can be attached easily to a lanyard, keychain or school backpack.

The Opel Safety Pendant is usually quite expensive (with an RRP of $399), but most retailers are selling it at a huge discount at the moment. It doesn't come with a SIM, but that means you have complete freedom to choose your telco provider and plan of choice. To start your search, here are some cheap mobile plans (under $15).

Bell
A word on consent

Kids' GPS trackers can be helpful safety tools, but you should never hide one in your child’s pocket or backpack without getting their consent first. We suggest explaining to them what the tracker does and why it’s important to you that they use it. Tell them what they can expect, and also share how they can use the tracker for their own benefits—for example, contacting their favourite person, you!

3. Pixbee Kids 4G: Best budget GPS tracker smartwatch for kids

Budget GPS smartwatch
Pixbee Kids 4G
Starting at$149.95plus monthly mobile plan

Price is accurate as of publish date. Read full disclaimer.

If you like the features of the Spacetalk Adventurer but not necessarily the price tag, the Pixbee Kids 4G Smart Watch is a solid alternative when you're on a budget.

It's capable of voice calls and video calls and allows your child to send photos and emojis to a list of parent-approved contacts. Speaking of parents, you can also keep track of your little one's activity thanks to the inbuilt GPS tracker and pedometer.

Other features include Classroom Mode, which allows your child to focus during school hours, SOS alerts, up to seven days of battery life, and IP67 water resistance to protect from the occasional splash or spot of rain.

The only major drawback of this tracker is that it only shows the wearer's real-time location, so there's no way to go back and see where your child has been.

You'll need to pair your Pixbee Kids 4G Smart Watch with a mobile plan that offers data, so here are some budget-friendly (no more than $15 per month) options.

4. AirTag: Best budget tracker for kids

Budget GPS tracker
airtag product
Apple AirTag
$159 (4-pack)

Price is accurate as of post date. Read full disclaimer.

We don't recommend Apple AirTags for tracking your child as they aren't designed to track people (for obvious reasons) and don't have GPS built-in, but they can make a good emergency option, or as a way to keep track of forgetful kids' belongings. If you've got an iPhone 11 or above, an AirTag can give you its precise location (within less than a metre), as opposed to GPS which is accurate to a radius of about five metres.

As long as you're aware of its limitations (like the fact that it can't make or receive calls, has no SOS button or geofencing and can't track fast motion) and as long as you've asked your child's consent to attach one to their clothes or backpack, the AirTag can be a good temporary solution while you save up for a more robust kids GPS tracker.

Final word

The Spacetalk Adventurer 2 earned our vote as the best GPS tracker smartwatch for kids because it includes virtually every safety feature that parents want in a kids' GPS tracker and more—including the ability to confirm their child’s safety with a video call.

But for those looking for something with fewer bells and whistles (a.k.a. less to distract your kid with), the Opel Safety Pendant is a great option.
